HSM's catalogue is large enough that most buyers start in the wrong place — comparing individual models across ranges that were never meant for the same job. The efficient way to shortlist is to pick the range first, then the security level, then the capacity. This guide sets out what each HSM line is built for, how sheet capacity, bin size and run time interact, and the three questions that narrow a catalogue of dozens to a shortlist of two or three.

Start with the range, not the model

Each HSM line is designed around a duty cycle rather than a size. That is the distinction that matters and the one that spec sheets bury.

shredstar is built for intermittent use — a few minutes at a time, a few times a day. Used that way it is reliable and inexpensive. Used as a department machine it will overheat, cut out, and wear quickly. Buying a shredstar for a busy office is the single most common HSM sizing mistake.

The three specifications, and how they interact

Sheet capacity is how many sheets the machine takes in a single pass. It is quoted at a specific paper weight and at a specific security level; the same model at a finer cut takes fewer sheets. Comparing sheet counts across different security levels is the most common way to mislead yourself.

Bin size determines how often someone empties the machine. It is easy to under-weight because it does not appear in performance figures, but a machine emptied three times a day is a machine people avoid. A finer cut also produces more voluminous waste per sheet, so a P-5 machine needs relatively more bin than a P-4 machine doing the same paper.

Run time — the duty cycle — is how long the machine works before it needs to cool. Continuous-rated machines have no such limit. This is the specification that decides whether a machine survives your peak rather than your average, and peaks are what actually break shredders.

The three interact. A machine with high sheet capacity and a small bin will be fast and constantly full. A machine with a long duty cycle and modest capacity suits steady all-day work. Matching the combination to how your office actually shreds matters more than maximising any one number.

Three questions that produce a shortlist

1. How many people share the machine? This sets the range. Roughly: one to three people is shredstar territory; four to thirty is SECURIO; a whole floor or a dedicated destruction operation is Powerline. Our guide on department shredders covers the middle band.

2. What is the most sensitive document that goes in? This sets the security level, and the level then constrains capacity. P-4 for general business documents, P-5 for personal, medical and financial records. See P-4 vs P-5.

3. Does paper arrive in batches or in trickles? This decides auto-feed. Batches favour an AF model where the operator loads and leaves; trickles mean the auto-feed hopper goes unused and a manual machine is better value. See autofeed shredders.

Three answers usually reduce the catalogue to two or three genuine candidates, at which point bin size and price separate them.

Where the ranges overlap

There are two genuine overlap zones, and both are where buyers get stuck.

The difference is duty cycle and build: the SECURIO machine is designed to be used hard and serviced, the shredstar is designed to be inexpensive. If the machine will be used daily by more than a couple of people, the SECURIO is the cheaper machine over five years.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between shredstar and SECURIO?

Duty cycle and build, more than headline capacity. shredstar is built for intermittent light use at low cost; SECURIO is built for sustained daily office use and to be serviced. For shared daily use, SECURIO is the lower cost over the machine's life.

Why does the same model quote different sheet capacities?

Because sheet capacity is quoted per security level. A finer cut means more cutting work per sheet, so the same machine takes fewer sheets at P-5 than at P-4. Always compare within one security level.

How do I know if I need continuous duty?

If your machine currently stops on thermal protection during normal work, or if destruction is a scheduled operation rather than an incidental task, you need continuous duty. Occasional peaks can be managed; regular cut-outs cannot.

Is a bigger bin always better?

Not always — bin size drives the machine's footprint, and floor space in an office is not free. Size the bin so that emptying fits naturally into an existing routine rather than interrupting work.

Do I need three-phase power for Powerline?

Many Powerline machines require it, and it should be confirmed before specifying rather than discovered at installation. Entry models vary, so check the individual machine.

Shortlisting properly
