A baler is one of the few pieces of warehouse equipment whose business case can be written on the back of an envelope. You are trading floor space and hauling charges for compaction, and the arithmetic either works or it does not. What makes it go wrong is sizing — buying a machine matched to a peak week rather than a typical one, or matched to the wrong material entirely. Here is how to size it honestly.

Start with weekly volume, not peak day
The single most common sizing error is specifying for the busiest week of the year. A baler sized for peak sits underused for fifty weeks and costs more to buy and run. Size for typical weekly volume and accept a second cycle during peaks.
- Measure what you actually generate: count carts or pallets of flattened board leaving the building over four ordinary weeks. That average is your design figure.
- Convert to bales: divide weekly volume by the machine's bale weight to get cycles per week. Anything under one cycle a day is comfortable.
- Check the handling side: a bale you cannot move is a bale that blocks the machine. Confirm you have a pallet truck or forklift rated for the weight.

Reading the specifications that matter
- Bale weight: the headline figure, and the one that drives your cycle count. Note that quoted weights assume the material the machine was tested with — cardboard, plastic film and paper bale to very different densities.
- Press force: determines what the machine can compact, not just how much. Light force handles cardboard and film; dense mixed waste and plastics need substantially more.
- Chamber dimensions: govern what fits without pre-cutting. If your cartons are large and you do not want a flattening step, check this before anything else.
- Loading height: a practical detail that decides whether staff will actually use the machine. Too high and material accumulates beside it instead.
- Cycle time: matters only at genuine volume. For most sites it is irrelevant compared with loading time.
Matching the machine to the material

- Scrap revenue: baled cardboard is a saleable commodity where loose board is a disposal cost. Prices move, so treat this as upside rather than the core case.

Practical notes before you commit
- Check ceiling height: vertical balers need clearance for the platen at full travel, not just the cabinet height. This catches people out.
- Confirm the power supply: many machines need three-phase. Verify before delivery, not after.
