How the range steps up

The mid range is the volume sweet spot for most US retail and light industrial sites. Bale weights reach the point where brokers will collect them as a standalone load, which is where the material stops being a disposal cost and starts being a commodity.
The large end is for distribution centres and manufacturers, where the constraint is throughput rather than bale economics and the machine runs several times a day.

The ceiling clearance mistake
This is the single most common problem with vertical balers, and it is entirely avoidable.
The height quoted on a specification sheet is the height of the machine standing still. A vertical baler needs additional clearance above that for the ram to travel and for the operator to open the top gate on models that load from above. Install one under a low soffit, a ceiling-mounted duct or a mezzanine edge and you have a machine that physically cannot complete its cycle.
Measure the lowest obstruction over the intended position — not the room's nominal ceiling height, which is often measured somewhere more generous. Sprinkler heads, lighting runs and ductwork all count. If clearance is genuinely tight, that constraint may push you to a smaller machine than your volume suggests, and the right response is to run it more often rather than to force a machine that does not fit.
Bale weight and who collects it
Before choosing a size, talk to whoever will take the bales away. Two things come out of that conversation and both change the specification.
Minimum bale weight. Brokers and mills work in loads. A bale below a certain weight costs more to handle than the material is worth, so it either gets refused or absorbed into a general waste charge — which defeats the purpose of buying the baler.
Collection format. Some collectors want bales palletised, some want them loose on the dock, some bring their own trailer. This affects the space you need around the machine as much as the machine itself.
The failure mode to avoid is buying a small baler because the volume seemed small, then finding the bales it produces are not commercially collectable. In that situation you have paid for a machine and still pay for disposal.
Feed height and whether the machine gets used
An underrated specification. If staff have to lift flattened cartons above chest height to load the machine, they will stack cartons beside it instead and someone will bale them later — which is to say, rarely.
Lower feed openings and wider doors get used. When comparing two machines with similar bale weights, the one that is easier to load is usually the better operational choice even if it is marginally larger or slower. The best baler is the one that is loaded as material arrives rather than in a weekly catch-up session.

Consumables and running the machine
Baling wire is the recurring cost and the recurring problem. Wire that is too light snaps as the bale expands after ejection; wire that is too heavy is awkward to tie and wastes material. Use the gauge the machine specifies rather than whatever is cheapest — see strapping wire.
Beyond wire, running costs are modest: hydraulic oil changes at intervals, occasional seal replacement, and periodic checks on the ram guides. Vertical balers are simple machines and tend to have long lives if the hydraulics are maintained and the chamber is not routinely overfilled.
One operational habit matters more than any maintenance item: eject bales promptly. Leaving a completed bale compressed in the chamber overnight strains the machine and makes ejection harder.
