HSM Shredder Parts and Consumables: What You Need and How Often
An HSM shredder in regular office use needs four consumables: shredder oil, bin bags, and eventually castors and bearings. Oil is the one that actually determines machine life — an unoiled cutting head loses cutting efficiency, draws more current and eventually fails, and it is by far the most common cause of premature shredder death. The working rule is to oil every time you empty the bin, and more often on micro-cut machines, which generate more friction and more dust than cross-cut machines.

Shredder oil — the one that matters
Shredder oil reduces friction between the cutting shafts, carries away paper dust, and stops the head heating under load. Skipping it is not a slow degradation you can catch later; the head loses cutting efficiency, starts tearing rather than cutting, and the motor compensates by drawing more current.
Use only shredder-specific oil. Aerosol lubricants and general-purpose oils are the usual improvisation and both cause problems — aerosols are flammable and leave residue, and the wrong viscosity attracts dust rather than carrying it away. Bin bags
Bags are not just tidiness. They contain paper dust, which is a real air-quality issue at volume, and they turn emptying a heavy bin into a single lift rather than a tip-and-shake. Oiling sheets
Oiling sheets are a pre-oiled sheet fed through the machine like paper. They are convenient for desk-side machines and for offices where nobody will reliably handle a bottle. For higher-volume machines, bottled oil applied across the feed throat is more economical and gives better coverage.
Castors, bearings and cutting heads
These are wear parts rather than consumables, and they separate a serviceable machine from a disposable one.
- Castors — the first thing to fail on a machine that gets moved regularly. Cheap and easy to replace.
- Bearings — usually announce themselves as noise before failure. Replaceable on commercial machines.
- Cutting heads — the expensive one. On a properly oiled machine, the head should outlast several sets of everything else.

What to keep on the shelf
For a single office machine: one spare bottle of oil and a box of bags. For a department or several machines: oil, bags and a spare set of castors, since a seized castor takes a machine out of service until someone sources one. Everything else can be ordered when needed.

How often should I oil an HSM shredder?
Every time you empty the bin is the practical rule. Under heavy use, or on a micro-cut machine, oil more often. Oiling is the single most effective thing you can do to extend cutting head life.
Can I use WD-40 or vegetable oil in a shredder?
No. Aerosol lubricants are flammable and leave residue that attracts dust, and vegetable oils gum up as they age. Use shredder-specific oil only.
What happens if I never oil my shredder?
Cutting efficiency drops, the head starts tearing paper rather than cutting it, the motor draws more current to compensate, and jams become frequent. Eventually the cutting head or the motor fails, and both are expensive compared with a bottle of oil.
Do I need special bags for a shredder bin?
Bags need to match the bin size and be strong enough for the load. Micro-cut particles are much denser and heavier than cross-cut strips for the same volume, so an undersized or thin bag will tear.
Are HSM cutting heads replaceable?
On commercial HSM machines, yes. Cutting heads, motors and bearings are serviceable parts rather than a sealed assembly, which is a large part of why the machines are worth maintaining rather than replacing.
