HSM Shredder Bins, Collection Carts and Box Inserts: Sizing Secure Collection
Share
HSM supplies three distinct container products and they are frequently confused. Lockable shredder bins are secure holding containers, available from 24 to 65 gallons, that keep confidential paper protected between the desk and the shredder. Secure collection carts are 4-wheel units for moving collected paper to a central shredding point. Cardboard box inserts are disposable liners that sit inside an HSM shredder's own waste compartment, sized to a specific model series, and provide no security function at all. Buying the wrong one is the most common ordering mistake in this category.
Getting the collection side right matters more than most buyers expect. A well-specified HSM shredder handles the destruction; these products handle everything before and after it.
HSM lockable shredder bins
These are the security product. A lockable steel bin with a deposit aperture holds confidential documents so they cannot be retrieved once posted.
HSM's range runs across several capacities:
- 24 gallon — small teams, individual offices, consulting rooms
- 27 and 30 gallon — general departmental use, corridor and print station siting
- 32 gallon — heavier document departments such as HR, finance and legal
- 65 gallon — records rooms, clear-outs, central collection points

HSM secure collection carts
Collection carts are wheeled units designed to move accumulated paper securely rather than to sit as a fixed deposit point. The HSM 4-wheel secure collection cart suits a routine where one person circulates the building emptying fixed bins and delivers the load to a central machine.
HSM also produces material collection trolleys matched to specific Powerline industrial shredders, such as the FA 500.3 and FA 400.2, which sit under the machine's discharge rather than serving as collection points. Those are throughput accessories, not security containers. See collection carts.
HSM cardboard box inserts
This is where most ordering errors happen. Cardboard box inserts are brown corrugated liners that drop into the waste compartment of an HSM shredder. They keep the compartment clean, make emptying easier, and go to recycling with the shredded paper inside them.
They are model specific. The dimensions are matched to a particular shredder series and a box for one series will not fit another. HSM lists them by the series they serve, for example:
- AF500 and B32 series — 15.75" x 10.24" x 21.46"
- B34 series — 17.52" x 11.81" x 21.46"
- P36i and P40i series — 18.9" x 15.16" x 22.05"
- P44i series — 23.62" x 17.52" x 22.4"
- 125 series — 15.04" x 22.4" x 10.83"
- 225.2 series — 14" x 12" x 21", 28 gallon
Order by your shredder's model series, not by dimension guesswork. The full range is at HSM shredder boxes and box inserts.
How to size secure collection
Size on emptying frequency with headroom. A bin that is completely full is not secure, because paper protrudes from the aperture and becomes retrievable.
- 1 to 5 users: 24 gallon, emptied weekly
- 5 to 20 users: 27 to 30 gallon, emptied weekly
- 20 to 50 users: 32 gallon, or 65 gallon emptied weekly
- Records rooms and clear-outs: 65 gallon plus a collection cart
Adjust upward for legal, finance, HR and medical records departments, which typically generate several times the general office average.
Matching collection volume to your HSM shredder
Collection containers are a buffer. If they fill faster than the shredder can clear them, paper backs up and gets stored insecurely, which defeats the point.
Before adding bins, check the shredder's duty cycle can absorb the volume. An HSM SECURIO AutoFeed machine that works through a stack unattended will clear collected bins far more efficiently than a manual-feed unit of the same sheet rating, because the constraint becomes machine time rather than staff time.
For high-volume sites, HSM Powerline industrial shredders pair with material collection trolleys sized to their discharge.
Siting bins so they get used
- Place the secure bin closer to the desk than the nearest open recycling bin
- Put one at every print and copy station
- Keep keys with a named owner under a documented emptying routine
- Never site a secure bin in a room most staff cannot enter
- Empty on schedule, not when full
Quick reference
- Lockable shredder bin: security container, 24 to 65 gallon, holds intact documents
- Collection cart: 4-wheel unit for moving paper to a central shredder
- Cardboard box insert: disposable liner inside the shredder, model specific, no security function
- Order inserts by: your shredder's model series
- Size bins on: emptying frequency with headroom
- Check: shredder duty cycle can clear the collected volume
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an HSM shredder bin and a box insert?
A shredder bin is a lockable steel container that holds intact confidential documents securely before destruction. A cardboard box insert is a disposable corrugated liner that sits inside the shredder's own waste compartment to catch shredded output. The bin is a security product; the insert is a housekeeping consumable.
How do I know which HSM box insert fits my shredder?
Order by your shredder's model series rather than by measuring. HSM lists inserts against specific series such as AF500 and B32, B34, P36i and P40i, P44i, 125 and 225.2. Boxes are dimensioned to a particular waste compartment and will not fit across series.
What size HSM shredder bin do I need?
Size on emptying frequency with headroom, since a completely full bin allows paper to protrude from the aperture and become retrievable. Roughly: 24 gallon for up to five users, 27 to 30 gallon for a department of five to twenty, 32 or 65 gallon above that, all emptied weekly.
Are HSM shredder bins lockable?
Yes. HSM's shredder bin range is lockable so that accumulated confidential documents cannot be accessed by cleaning staff, contractors or passers-by. Keys should sit with a named owner under a documented emptying routine.
Do I need a collection cart as well as bins?
Only if paper has to travel. Collection carts are for moving accumulated documents from fixed bins to a central shredding point. If your shredder sits alongside the bins, carts add nothing. If you run one central machine serving multiple floors, they make the emptying round practical.
